CCL Veloduct - the UK's largest manufacturer of rigid and flexible circular ductwork - has been quick to welcome the industry-wide initiative to rationalise the standard sizes of circular ductwork.

The company's new price list already highlights the fact that 180mm, 224mm, 280mm and 600 mm diameter sizes are being phased out by the end of 2002.

In the first phase of a cost cutting initiative driven by The Association of Ductwork Contractors and Allied Services (ADCAS) the number of sizes available is being reduced in compliance with BS EN 1506:1998.

The move has received the full support of other major trade associations and professional bodies representing every facet of the building services industry. B.S.R.I.A., C.I.B.S.E., H.E.V.A.C. and H.V.C.A. will all join in the implementation and promotion of the rationalisation campaign.

Harmony with Europe
Commenting on the move David Barker Joint Managing Director of CCL Veloduct expressed delight that the UK was moving towards harmony with its European colleagues.

"For a start this rationalisation reduces the chance of confusion and error without any prejudice to system performance. Cutting the number of standard duct sizes also reduces the number of ancillary components from volume control and fire dampers to VAV boxes and attenuators. The total reduction in the range of ductwork and components makes it possible for us to stock more standard products in our national branch network – and that means an even better service to the customer.

The initiative brings us closer into line with European practice and is certainly in the spirit of the Egan and Latham recommendations.

It's a big step in the right direction, but we believe there's still room for improvement and we look forward to the announcement of the next phase in the rationalisation process."
